This is my weekly set for Christchurch City dance music station 105.7 Pulzar FM. I recorded this at home on a very wet Sunday afternoon while drinking hot coffee and watching the rain fall outside. This set contains a good variety of house, taking the listener on a journey from electro through various other sub-genres. Keep an ear open for “Doves Cry”, which is an excellent remix of the classic track. I played this at the last Audiodreams, and since then I’ve had people asking me about the tune, wanting to know who remixed it etc.
Next Friday I’m at FOAM Bar with the Curious Noise crew. If you’re in Christchurch, come on down and enjoy a night of house, electro, and breaks. In the meantime, enjoy this set. It will be broadcast on 105.7 Pulzar FM on Thursday night at 10pm, so be sure to tune in and listen.
Here are 3 brand new sets direct from therobsta. These are part of a series of 5 distinct mixsets, which are to be broadcast on 105.7 PulzarFM. The 3 sets included here take the listener on a journey through some wonderful vocal house to straight house and then into the realm of electro. The first set is vocal heavy and contains a nice range of clubby and discohouse tracks. The second set is a pure house set–absolutely brilliant track selection–and the third set is upbeat electro. Rob also mixed two “twisted” sets, which I’ll put into the next entry. I like to leave a certain amount of time between posts to give everyone a chance to listen to the latest mixes before they disappear down the list.
I really enjoyed putting this set together. As always, I search for a range of tunes that will build a progression and take the listener on a journey. This journey starts with some club sounding funky house before transitioning to the middle section of the set…a harder club sound. We then hint back towards the funky/vocal sound, which makes a triumphant return at the end of the mix.
This mix will be broadcast on Christchurch’s Pulzar FM in high quality format. If you’re in Christchurch, tune in to Pulzar on 105.7FM.
Another brilliant offering from one of Christchurch City’s most experienced DJs. Rob Munro (aka “therobsta”) has produced a definitive house mix representative of the April/May 09 house scene. This epic mix contains Rob’s usual variety of “get up and move” house tunes.
Last Saturday I did a back-to-back set with Rob at the Pulzar FM launch party. The club (Liquidity) was packed, and all had a great time. We must do that again
Rob’s latest mix is a snapshot of the Beatport Top 10 as it stands late April 2009. But this is not a simple compilation, as the tracks are not assembled in Top 10 order. Rob has used his usual flare for music to build a mixset journey out of the Beatport Top 10. This mix takes us on a meaningful journey, exploring the light and shade of the Top 10. Its wonderfully mixed, as always, and well worth a listen.
I’m happy to be DJing a back-to-back set with therobsta on Saturday 2nd May at Liquidity. This is part of the Pulzar FM Launch celebrations, and is shaping up to be a great night. If you’re in Christchurch on May 2nd, come along to Liquidity and join the party
Here is the Finale in the Enlightenment series. In this set I return to some melodic house sounds, with lots of nice vocals. There is a disco/funky feel to the start of the set. Of course, all mixsets need to take the listener on a journey, and to this end Enlightenment 4 slowly edges towards some good chunky electro beats.
This is where the Enlightenment journey finishes. We’ve come full circle. Enlightenment is over 4 hours of pure house goodness. Each mix can stand alone, or can be played consequetively for a full party.
This mix will be broadcast on Christchurch’s Pulzar FM in high quality format. If you’re in Christchurch, tune in to Pulzar on 105.7FM.
Enlightenment - The Third Movement is the next in my current series of four mixsets. Unlike the previous mix, the music in this one has a harder edge and is a little lighter on the vocals. This mix is also distinct from Enlightenment 2 in that it builds more of a journey. It starts with a nice disco-house style track and moves quickly through to the harder sound, which makes up the majority of the set. There is a temporary reprieve in the middle of the set with the song “Fly”. The set then continues until it softens again with the final two tracks. In this way the listener is taken on the style of journey that I have written about here before.
As with all my mixset recordings, I have a planned structure in which I attempt to emulate the progression of my live performances. It is a challenge to reproduce the structure without a visible audience to feed off, but there are benefits in having no live audience. It allows the DJ to try tracks that may not work in a live setting. And, of course, being able to pre-plan the set structure has obvious advantages.
This mix is also going to be broadcast on Christchurch based radio station “Pulzar FM”, in high quality format.
See you back for Enlightenment - The Finale.

Enlightenment - The Second Movement is a follow on from my Enlightenment One. The music in this mix is generally laid back, with an electro flavor. The purpose of the Enlightenment series is to provide three mixsets of different character. They can each stand on their own, or they can be played together for a complete 3 hour journey.
This mix is also going to be broadcast on Christchurch based radio station “Pulzar FM”, in high quality format.
See you back for Enlightenment - The Third Movement.

A quick-fire ten min mix, built from slices of 6 tracks.
I planned this short mix a few weeks ago, but have only just gotten around to recording it. The track selection and timing is crucial in a ten minute mix. This one is built with segments from 6 tracks, and has a nice progression.
Enjoy…

Produced for the relaunch of PulzarFM, therobsta’s latest mix takes us on a journey of sounds currently popular in the Australian clubs. Rob recently returned from 6 months in Brisbane, Australia, and he brings with him a nice touch of the club sounds from across the Tasman.
Technically, this set is mixed to perfection. The mix was obviously well planned, and Rob definitely knows his music. The music has a sort of electro feel, with a nice combination of traditional house and indie sounding vocals.
Keep an ear open for “Blue Monday”, a remix that maintains a strong connection to the track’s original feel.
Welcome to my first mixset recording for 2009. This is the first in a new series I’m launching called “Enlightenment”. As always, I focus of building a structure for the set.
My aim in all mixsets is to take the listener on a meaningful journey. To this end I plan the set by carefully selecting tracks that will engage the listener, build them up through cycles of anticipation and release.
This set starts, as usual, with some melodic disco house tracks. I then experiment with some electro and indie sounding tracks. Listen through, there are a few surprises in here

Therobsta has a wondefully diverse style. In addition to supplying us with the best in cutting edge prog/electro, he continues to produce uplifting funky/disco house sets. This latest mixset from Rob represents the purest vocal house sounds. He has assembled a fantastic array of house mixes of R&B style music. The result is a mixset, which is keeps you moving. These sounds grab you and hook you in, and the progression simply keeps you hooked. Its impossible to listen to a set like this and not find yourself lifted and in a better mood than when you started.
Rob offers the following advice: “Play it often, and play it loud”
Direct from Brisbane, therobsta has sent through his latest two mixsets. The first, “Summertime” is the most uplifting journey through funky/disco house and into some electro sounds. The tracks here are a nice representation of the style. Throughout, the mixing is perfect, and in most cases the tracks are harmonically compatible, which allows for pleasing transitions. Artistically, Rob has created a journey that takes his audience from a defined start through to a conclusion. During the journey, the listener is treated to an ongoing progression of buildups and releases. This cycle of anticipation/release is what separates a well structured set from an unstructured set. Now, the structure of a set can be pre-planned, or it can happen spontaneously (as it most often does in a live situation). The point is that the audience is being taken on a purposeful journey.
In “Prog City” Rob introduces a cross between electro/prog/eurohouse. An interesting new sound which can be enjoyed in any situation. As with “Summertime”, the mixing is technically perfect and the structure of the set takes the listener on a meaningful journey.
