Maestro B - Your Body

August 29 2010

Category: Mixsets

My latest mixset, mixed on Turntables, introduces a range of new tunes and takes the listener on another defined journey. Lots of good tribal beats, which make this set perfect for a Saturday night party. Keep an ear open for “I Make You GaGa” by David Morales. I’ve included the original mix here, but I am remixing the tune with DJQ, so stay tuned for that release coming soon.

Enjoy

Maestro B - I Been Looking

August 20 2010

Category: Mixsets

Mixed on turntables, my latest mix starts with some feel good discohouse tunes featuring some incredible vocals and awesome sounds that comprise the discohouse tradition (think Hed Kandi). The set journeys through to the more serious realm of dance music before finishing on “Crazy”, always a favorite of mine.

My latest journey travels through several realms, beginning with good chunky beats — light on the vocal, building into some good funk grooves and peaking with some energizing electro. The progression here is an obvious and continual build up.

Maestro B - Sing It

I’ve had an amazing couple of weeks - played at some great parties and heard some incredible DJs. Last night we put on a Rave for my DJ students. This gave them the opportunity to play out for the first time and I was thrilled with how well they went. Looks like the world now has some new DJs.

Here is my latest mix, produced for 105.7 PulzarFM.

Maestro B - We’ll make it

May 30 2010

Category: Mixsets

Its been a busy couple of weeks, which has seen me DJing at Graffiti White with DJQ, performing a 5 hour set at 8-Wired in Timaru, and doing a live DJ set at General Issue clothing store at Westfield mall.

On Monday I am teaching another DJing course–the first one for 2010. I’m looking forward to bringing the magic of DJing to a fresh young group of talented students.

Enjoy my latest mix, produced for 105.7 PulzarFM.

Maestro B - Shine Now

May 11 2010

Category: Mixsets

Produced using vinyl control records, this set takes you on a familiar journey with well defined sections: intro / development / finish. As always, the tunes are harmonically compatible and the set builds up towards the finish at which point it settles back down with a more laid back melodic vocal track.

I have very much been enjoying my rediscovery of turntables and vinyl, and I intend to continue using this traditional technology whenever possible. In fact, last Friday night I DJ’d live at MOS cafe with turntables. Nice!

Maestro B - Turn the Tables

April 27 2010

Category: Mixsets

I did it! I pulled out my old Technics 1200 turntables, dusted them off, and powered them up. Its been 3 years since I mixed with vinyl–the price of new records just got too high. But, after 3 years of CDJs and midi controllers, I have now gone back to vinyl. Of course, records are still far too expensive, but with software and timecode records, I can still mix authentically with turntables while enjoying the benefit of low cost mp3s. Many DJs use software, but most favor timecode CDs. Personally, I love the vinyl interface, so I’ve gone down that road. I guess when DJing in clubs I’ll still use CDJs, since most clubs don’t seem to have turntables anymore. But in my own studio, I’ll produce mixsets with turntables.

Here is my first vinyl mix since early 2007.

Maestro B - Art of Remix

April 12 2010

Category: Mixsets

Something with more of a commercial feel for this set. I’ve recently been downloading a range of tunes from the top 20 pop charts. These tracks have been greatly enhanced due to the creative remix efforts of the DJs who work tireless hours ensuring a more club-friendly feel to the music. As always with my sets, I have planned a progression which has resulted in a nice journey. The progression is not as pronounced as in my other sets because these tunes all have a similar feel, but you will enjoy a journey here nonetheless.

This set was produced for 105.7 PulzarFM.

Robsta - Disco

Category: Mixsets

I am currently listening to disco! Yes, Christchurch City’s Robsta has mixed up a wonderful set of disco remixes. Familiar old school tunes, filtered with hints of our 21st Century sensibility makes for perfect listening. As always, Rob crafts a journey that infects the soul and keeps you listening to the end.

Be sure to listen to Robsta’s weekly show on 105.7 PulzarFM (Wednesday 10pm-11pm), and catch him playing Live every Saturday night at Liquidity from 10:30pm.

Maestro B - Hurt in the Disco

February 26 2010

Category: Mixsets

I’ve had a quiet week as far as DJing goes, so this has given me the chance to plan another mixset for my weekly radio show. Here is my latest mixset offering.

This journey starts with an upbeat disco-house sound, featuring soulful vocals and engaging basslines. During the set we make a transition to a harder sound, which has become a regular pattern in my mixes. The journey comes full circle and finishes with a minor key vocal track.

This set was produced for 105.7 PulzarFM.

Robsta - A Night With TheRobsta

February 25 2010

Category: Mixsets

Robsta has recently taken up a new residency at Christchurch City’s “Liquidity” bar. He is one of the few resident DJs in the city who still holds a commitment to vinyl and turntables, and you can enjoy him mixing live with this wonderful technology (albeit with control records & serato). It is pleasing to see a DJ using turntables, as they have an authenticity that is missing somewhat in this age of CDJ 2000s and midi-controllers.

Rob has supplied three new sets, which he aptly titles “A Night With The Robsta”. The mixes take you on a compressed journey through a typical club night with Rob, and should be thought of as a complete unit.

Maestro B - Make Me

February 6 2010

Category: Masterpiece, Mixsets

A wonderful journey here, which breaks into two distinct sections. The first part starts with 5 deep house tracks before swinging 180 degrees into some serious dance floor beats, which make up the second part of the set. As an intermediate track separating the two sections, I’ve used “Paparazzi (Moto Blanco remix). This tune is distinct from the rest of the tunes in the set, and serves as a nice transition track. The contrast between the two halves of the set really makes it a full and enjoyable journey. The beautiful, melodic, soulful sounds in the first half compliment very nicely with the harder dance sounds of the second half. Throughout this set I filter loops and samples to ensure the progression gels together.

I have put this in the “Masterpiece” category because the set was planned, and the timing and track selection was deliberately decided upon to ensure a sensible harmonic and mood progression.

This set was produced for 105.7 PulzarFM.

My first set for 2010 takes you on a journey through light and shade, with a couple of surprises thrown in. Easing in with nice instrumental tunes, I then filter in some of the tracks containing really interesting chord progressions, which darken the mood temporarily until Isoften the journey with uplifting sounds.

Keep an ear open from around the 44 min mark. At 44:22 I loop the bass line in “Come and Get my Lovin” and mash that up with a quirky swing-bop tune. The overall effect is pleasing and provides an interesting diversion.
