From time-to-time I will archive the weekly mix, and keep it online. I’ll do this when there are several new tracks included. This will give us something to look back on in the future. I imagine that archiving once every couple of months will provide us with a good record to look back on to track the development of the music.
So, if this mix is not archived it will be replaced (and thus disappear) next week.

This mix falls nicely into the “deep house” category. It contains a range of tracks that are heavy on the vocals (especially male vocals). The songs here are often driven by their basslines, with punctuation of persistent chord progressions. The chords are often synth based rather than piano or strings, which distinguishes the songs in this set from other house sub-genres. To me the mix an obvious “deep house” mix.
It is always difficult to describe a style of music with words, so I think the best way to get a feel for the mix is to listen. That’s obvious really

The music in this set contains nice melodic vocals. The nice thing about these vocals is that they have the feel of deep soulful house, yet the tempo remains up at the level of more party/dance orientated house music. Interestingly, during one of his voice announcements, Roger describes one of the tracks as “deep house”. I personally think that some of the musical elements shift it out of the “deep house” category. I guess this just goes to show that house music has many labels and in some ways it is difficult to pin down the sub genres. Of course, Roger Sanchez is much more famous than me, so he’s probably right
In addition to deep house, you’ll hear some nice examples of “disco house” in the set. You’ll recognize the sound immediately. Listen for the disco type bass lines and funky guitar type sounds. Lots of nice disco strings too.
Enjoy this mix set from Roger Sanchez…

Feel free to download, share with friends etc. As always I have a low quality version, which should stream with a 56k modem. I have also provided the high quality version, which streams at 128kbps. This is the one that is downloadable using the download link.

There’s a nice progression in the set and you can get a feel for how it progresses from the start to the end of the night. This seems quite summery and beach party orientated in a way and I think it could almost fall into the category of “deep house”. Its definitely soulful with an emphasis on vocals.

Sanchez was born in New York and attended Manhattan’s School of Art & Design. In addition to being involved in the break-dancing scene during the early 1980s, he began DJ’ing at the youthful age of 13. Sanchez mixed for a number of years at famous New York hotspots such as the Tunnel while studying architecture during the daylight hours. In 1987 Sanchez left college to concentrate on music. His club Ego Trip became popular and his mix-tapes sold well on Broadway.
One of the things I like about this set is that Sanchez himself makes a few voice announcements. And the set itself is a great pumping house mix that contains a good selection of tracks to get any party moving. Not too heavy on the vocals, this set is a good example of party house music. Its the type of set that keeps your head moving with the rhythm as you listen. This set is a contrast to some of the deep vocal house sets I’ve featured here (I know, I’ve said that about a couple of sets recently). It goes to show how varied the music that falls under the “house” banner actually is.
