I am working on a new project. My plan is to organize a series of invite-only house parties under the name “Audio Dreams“. Its an idea I got after reading about the history of “The Loft” in NYC. By inviting people to attend the house party, I can be sure that the audience will be there for the right reasons–namely, to spend the evening listening to a great selection of music. Costs will be covered by charging $10 per person.

The goal is to set this up with the help of students in my DJ class. Between all of us, we are likely to get enough invitations out there to cover costs and make it a worth-while event. This will be an all-age event, which will mean keeping it alcohol free. This will be good, because it also means people are there for the right reasons.

Hopefully this will become a regular event–perhaps monthly. I’ll post updates on the party here. In the meantime, enjoy this set…

Ivan F brings us this wonderful mix of vocal house, which he hosts on his deephousesection site. This set is comprised of a range of tracks which have a soulful feel without slipping too far into the deephouse category. Having said that, the overall feel of the set is cruisy and relaxed. The great thing about this music is that it can have a relaxed vocal feel, and yet entice people to move to the infectious dance beat.

It was nice to hear a laid back mix of Collette “didn’t mean to turn you on” in this set. I love that track, and to have it followed up with the saxophone grooves of Fudge “Nightglows” before slipping into the vocally inspiring “Do you wanna Boogie” was perfect.

Ivan F’s set is titled simply “mixshow006″ and is sure to uplift your day.

I just received an invitation to “Boss”, a private event in San Francisco with music supplied by Donovan (see my earlier entry on Donovan). Its a shame I live so far away, because I would love to attend. Donovan DJs for many private house parties in the San Francisco area. Its a great idea because unlike the regular club scene, the audience are there primarily for the music and atmosphere. I often find in clubs that the music is secondary to the drugs and alcohol. Well, that’s my take on it anyway.

Donovan has an extensive collection of pictures of his parties online at www.donovansf.com. While you browse those images, you will enjoy listening to this set from Donovan. It is called “Micasa Sexy Latin & Brazilian House, vol. 2″ and is built from an awesome collection of up-beat latin house tracks. I love this stuff. As you immerse yourself in the tunes, you feel an almost instinctual urge to dance.

NaJ has just released his April “Powerful House” mix. Check out his nice style of jazzy, soulful house. You could probably classify this deep house sound as U.S. Garage, though I’m hesitant about using the term “Garage” since it means something different for many people.

You can stream the mix with real player or download the .rm file to listen from your hard-drive.

Thanks for the heads-up on the new mix NaJ.

DJ Manureva has just released his latest set. This mix is part of his fruitysoul series and contains a wonderful selection of soulful/disco house. I love this music. The chord progressions in many of these tracks build you up, leave you hanging and then resolve themselves. The disco style basslines further enhance the uplifting feel in this set. Put simply, this music makes you feel good.

Manureva provides a track listing:
1. Groove Junkies pres. T.C Moses “devotion” (Gj’s classic vox) (Morehouse)

I’ve just uploaded the latest set. It contains a nice blend of my usual style of music–vocal house, with hint of disco. Last week some of my students and myself mixed a live 2 hour set for students at our school. It was a great opportunity for my students to demonstrate their new skills to an audience. It was good for me too :) We did back to back mixing, so the set was interesting and diverse. It is always good to introduce house to people who normally listen to other styles of music, so it was nice to see a range of students come through to listen.

Did you know that you can subscribe to brentishouse with itunes? I thought it would be more difficult to set up a true podcast, but the RSS feed on this site seems to be compatible. If you subscribe to www.brentishouse.com, it will work but itunes will complain that the format isn’t correct. To do it properly, subscribe to http://brentishouse.com/?feed=rss2 then it will work. Cool, huh?

Metropolis Radio

April 15 2006

Category: General

An update on Metropolis radio–of particular interest to people who live in Christchurch City.

We have changed our frequency to 108.0FM. This seems to give us a much clearer signal, since there are not many other stations in that band area. I was very happy to hear our signal broadcasting through the central city area and out to some of the nearby suburbs. Making the frequency change will almost certainly grow our audience… a good thing :)

The station still contains a range of musical styles, but has an emphathis on electronica–especially in the evenings and during weekends.

Our next step is to get Metropolis streamed live over the net. When this happens I will place a link to the feed here.

Driguez provides a short 35 minute mix. He describes his influences as progressive and dark, tribal, progressive house, along with trance.

I couldn’t find any background info on Driguez other than the fact that his real name is Joel Rodriguez and he lives in Orlando.

If you like progressive house sounds, you will enjoy this set.
Driguez provides a playlist as follows:

1. Mara - Love Song (white label)
2. Martin Accorsi & Tim Skinner - Playing For Silence [playing for ramrod remix] (bedrock)
3. Steve Lawler - Rise ‘In (bedrock)
4. Be Quiet - Another World [martin h solar remix] (solar recordings)
5. Dario Nuñez & David Vio - Festen Roose (humana music)

My latest mixed set is now online. This one runs for just over 50 minutes, and is contains my usual style of music.

I have just finished reading a book called “Last night a DJ saved my life”. It is probably the most definitive history of DJ’ing available. It tracks the evolution of DJ’ing from the first radio DJs through to the superstar DJs of the mid to late 1990s.

I think it is well worth reading, as it contains lots of interesting (and somewhat obscure) facts about the technology, music, clubs, and personalities that made DJ’ing into the highly respected career that it is today.

I found this set by accident. Since I cannot speak the language of the host site, I am uncertain about the details of the mix. It seems to be mixed by Eryc P, and the tracks in the mix are all David Morales remixes. David Morales is, of course, one of the founders of the modern remix.

Here is the playlist:

1. Mariah Carey It’s Like That (David Morales Classic Mix)
2. Jaydee Plastic Dreams (David Morales Mix / Excerpts)
3. David Morales feat. Lea-Lorién Better That U Leave (Gadjo Remix)
4. David Morales feat. Tamra Keenan Here I Am (Full Intention Vocal Mix)
5. David Morales feat. Angela Hunte Feels Good (Stonebridge Club Mix)
6. David Morales feat. Lea-Lorién How Would U Feel (Stereo Dub Mix)
7. Jaydee Plastic Dreams (David Morales Mix)
8. David Morales feat. Lea-Lorién How Would You Feel (Peter Rauhofer Remix

Nicely mixed, and awesome house music, you will enjoy this set.
