Rips

July 14 2008

Category: Mixsets

Rips is a Christchurch City DJ, who has been featured here before. He is a strong advocate for the underground scene where most of the innovation in dance music occurs. In this mix, Rips takes us on a journey through techhouse, techno, and electro.

From a technical point of view, this set is mixed to perfection. The beat matching is spot on, and Rips chooses good mix-points throughout the set.

From an artistic standpoint, this set takes us on a well defined journey. Anticipation is built up, and then released throughout the set–this release often comes in the form of tracks that contain pleasing chord progressions, or a hint of vocal. Rips’ set has a clearly defined beginning and the journey moves us towards its clearly defined finish.

For more info on Rips, see his website: www.audiogenus.net. In the meantime, enjoy the pulsating, vibrating, underground sound of “Crush” by Rips.

The art of DJ’ing is a topic I keep coming back to. For many, the DJ is simply a person who changes records. They believe that anyone (technical beatmatch skills notwithstanding) can do the job–even an iPod. My argument, which I have written about before, is that the DJ is constructing a creative product through the assembly of a range of tracks.

A well constructed mixset will take its audience on a journey through highs and lows, through light and shade. A DJ can be technically skilled, yet build sets that do not go anywhere (or worse, go in random directions). A good DJ will take his audience on a meaningful journey. I believe that people can tell the difference between a good DJ and a bad DJ–even if they both have the same level of technical mixing. This is because there is an art to creating a good set.

I feel the need to push this point, so I plan to write another article on the matter. In the meantime, enjoy this set. It opens with a classic sounding house track which leads the way to a couple of funky/disco sounding songs. The set then diverges to a dirty electrohouse sound starting with the brilliant remix of “Freed From Desire” from Backside Artists. After delving into this realm, the music shifts back to an uplifting feel, bringing the listener back to the feel-good funky house sound.
